In the 1920's women didn't want to cut their hair as it was seen feminine to have longer hair and short hair was not. This soon changed a few years later, many women taking the plunge and cutting off their locks. The reactions to shorter hair were mixed from both men and women but it soon became a popular hairstyle and one man completely revolutionised the art of hairdressing all over the world.

Whilst the Marcel wave is a popular hairstyle because it stayed in longer and was easier to achieve, finger waves were also another popular technique that look very similar. Finger waves were created by using your fingers and a comb on wet hair and being gripped into place whilst it dried.

I really like the look of this era, I like the idea of using the finger waves as a technique for my design but I want to create a contemporary version that looks different but with a hint of the 20's in it. To help me decide to do this era, I have created a historical and contemporary hair chart.
Here I have created a Marcel wave design and I think I would quite enjoy researching and creating a design for this era.

1940's Victory Rolls
The 1940s was an iconic era for history. With the Second World War going on, many women took over "male jobs" in factories, farms and by even joining the armed forces. They stepped up and provided for their families whilst their men were out fighting.

Another popular garment was a snood, they were used for everyday wear and for work. The snood was placed at the top of the head and all of the hair would be encased in there. This hairstyle was especially useful for woman working in factories as it kept their hair out of the way and to stop it from getting caught in machinery.

Victory rolls was a very popular style, often said to get its name from the fighter plane manoeuvres of World War II. The planes created an exhaust roll that remained in the sky after leaving the area and inspired many patriotic civilians to adopt the name in honour of the soldiers returning home.

This era has really interested me as it was start of a big movement of equality during the war. It has got me really intrigued to research a bit more and I feel I can create a good character based on the background from this era. Below are some hair charts that I could possibly develop.

I really like the history about this era and I feel I could create a good character based on this. I have created victory rolls as this is one of the main hairstyles of this era.

1970's Disco
The 1970's was a diverse decade for hairstyles. In 1971 Switzerland gave women voting rights which sparked the start of women's equality. Women liberty was growing and had an influence on advertising and cosmetic. In 1973 "Charlie" was the first advert to feature a woman wearing trousers.

I like this era and you can create really big and dramatic hairstyles but in terms of actually creating a character, I don't think this era could be as strong as the others. But I have created hair charts to see what designs I could have possibly done.

I have created disco hair and I like the effect however I don't think there is much to do for this era, I want to create a character rather than just a wig.

After researching a few eras that had most interest to me, I have decided that I am going to chose the 1940s era because of the historical events that took place in our country. We wear poppies in memory of the soldiers annually which plays an important part in peoples lives.
